Black Snake!

The other day, in broad daylight, Jason and I saw a black snake scaling the large oak tree in our front yard. He was about 3 feet long, and the way he moved up the tree was amazing!

Snake in a tree!

As we got closer, he started to hesitate about climbing higher, and decided to turn around and slither down into the wood pile.

Even though one of our chicks went missing a few days before, I just can’t be mad at such an amazing creature. We’ve often seen him hunting frogs in Heidi’s Hole (the little pond in the garden), and perhaps he ate our chick, but you never know. Maybe it was a hawk

What a beautiful creature!

  1. OK now you’ve gone too far. Don’t expect any likes from your father or uncles. But it is a sight. Could he really have eaten a chicken? Yikes and I thought I had a big mouth.

    • Ha, ha! It’s possible that he got one of the chicks… But perhaps the 4 chicken moms would have been able to scare him off. :)

  2. I have never seen one get a full grown chicken, but they have got the eggs. They do keep the copperheads away ( or so I am told).

    • I’ve heard that they keep the copperheads away, too! We still haven’t seen a single copperhead in our 2.5 years in the country, but we’ve seen plenty of black snakes.
